The Silent Power of Blue-White

That cobalt blue that comes to mind when one thinks of tiles. The feeling it evokes in you when blue and white come together.

The Silent Power of Blue-White

I love the fusion of blue and white; it has a mesmerizing quality.

The meeting of these two colours in tile art is not a coincidence; it is a journey that spans centuries.

The simple yet dignified tradition known as the "single colour period" in the 15th century is still considered the key to a timeless appearance today.

So, why do these two colours affect us so much? Because this duo carries the purest forms of nature to the tip of the brush.

Blue represents the infinity of the sky, the calm of the sea, and that beloved feeling of freedom. When observed, it has a soothing, peaceful energy.

White is the perfect complement to this depth, symbolising simplicity, clarity, and light.

However, behind this tranquil appearance lies an exciting yet risky process at my studio table. Working with cobalt blue is like dancing with fire. Cobalt paint is very sensitive to brush strokes.

If you apply too little, it becomes pale, and if you apply a little too much, the texture is disturbed due to the thickness, and it can even spread the pattern by 'running' in the kiln.

So, to reach that favourite serene blue, everything must go perfectly at temperatures exceeding a thousand degrees in the kiln.

For me, blue is infinity, and white is the purest void within that infinity...

But above all, it is the 'miracle' that comes out of that thousand-degree kiln itself.

Where do blue and white belong in your home or soul?
